The method involves creating a scratch by moving a hard tool (scratch tip) of specific geometry under specific load and velocity conditions across the surface of a test sample, and then evaluating the result.
The method is used to investigate the behavior of specified sample types under defined scratch conditions and to classify the scratch type of samples within the limitations inherent in the test conditions.
It can also be used to determine comparative data for different material types through a scratch map where the test load and test speed are determined using the basic constant method of the types of scratch behavior for each set of test conditions.
The method is suitable for use with uncoated and unlacquered thermoplastic molding materials and thermosetting molding materials. The method specifies the preferred dimensions and preferred pick geometry for the test specimen.
