ISO 22518 Paints and Varnishes - Determination of Solvents in Water-Dilutable Coating Materials - Gas Chromatographic Method

This standard specifies a method for the determination by gas chromatography of solvents in water-dilutable paints and varnishes, binder solutions, emulsions and dispersions.

The method defined in this standard is not applicable to the determination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) and Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOC) content.

After the sample is prepared, the components contained in the tested sample are separated by gas chromatography. Depending on the product type, a hot or cold sample injection system can be used. Once the components are identified, they are quantified from their peak areas using the internal standard method.

The device will have a variable temperature injection block with a sample separator. Injection temperature can be adjusted with 1 K precision. The division rate can be adjusted and monitored. The sample separator insert should contain silanized glass wool to retain non-volatile components.

It will be cleaned and supplied with new glass wool packaging or replaced as necessary to eliminate defects caused by binder or pigment residues (e.g. adsorption of solvents). The presence of adsorption is revealed by peak tailing, especially in low volatility components.
