ISO 4548-9 Lubricating Oil Filters for Internal Combustion Engines - Inlet and Outlet Relief Valve Tests

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 4548-9 testing. ISO 4548-9 specifies methods for measuring the effectiveness of inlet or outlet anti-drain valves if fitted to a "spin-on" or "easy-change" type full-flow lubricating oil filter for internal combustion engines.

ISO 4548-9 Lubricating Oil Filters for Internal Combustion Engines - Inlet and Outlet Relief Valve Tests

The ISO 4548 series specifies standard test procedures for the measurement and performance of full-flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines. It has been prepared in separate chapters, each dealing with a specific performance characteristic. The tests together provide the necessary information to evaluate the properties of a filter, but tests can be performed separately if agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer.

Two test procedures are described for both inlet and outlet relief valves. Test A covers the key core performance of the valve in terms of anti-drain feature functionality. Test B covers the recommended baseline performance test and additional procedures to identify additional performance data that may be required.

If the purpose of this test is to evaluate only the performance of the valve and not the integrity of the filter assembly as a whole, the potential leak path between the threaded mounting plate and the gasket holder must also be sealed.

The standard covers two types of tests for anti-drain valves:

  • Valve Opening Pressure Test: This test measures the pressure required to open the anti-relief valve and allow oil to flow through the filter. The valve is exposed to increasing pressure until it opens and the opening pressure is recorded.
  • Valve Fitting Leak Test: This test measures the amount of oil leaking from the closed anti-drain valve. The filter is pressurized and the valve is closed, and then the amount of oil leaking from the valve is measured.

ISO 4548-9 provides detailed instructions on how to conduct these tests, including the specific equipment and conditions that should be used. By following these methods, manufacturers can ensure that their full-flow lube oil filters are equipped with anti-drain valves that operate accurately and reliably, providing the engine with the required oil pressure during start-up and preventing oil leakage when the engine is not running.
