ISO 6259-1 Thermoplastic Pipes - Determination of Tensile Properties - Part 1: General Test Method

ISO 6259-1 can be applied to any type of thermoplastic pipe, regardless of its intended use. This part of ISO 6259 covers a short-term tensile test method for determining the tensile properties of thermoplastic pipes.

It cannot be considered significant for applications where the application conditions of the force are significantly different from those in this test method, such as applications requiring appropriate impact, creep, and fatigue tests.

Tensile properties tests are in principle intended to be considered tubular material tests. The results may be useful as a material process control test, but are not a quantitative assessment of long-term pipe performance.

Currently, ISO 6259 consists of three parts. The first part gives the general conditions to determine the tensile properties of thermoplastic pipes. The other two sections, in turn, provide specific information on conducting tests on pipes made of different materials.

Test pieces of specific shapes and sizes are obtained by cutting or machining longitudinally from a thermoplastic tube. Tensile properties are measured using a testing machine under specified conditions.

The test piece should be held in such a way as to prevent slipping relative to the jaws as much as possible, and this should be done with the type of jaw that maintains or increases the pressure on the test piece as the force applied to the test piece increases.
