ISO 8124-5 Safety of Toys - Part 5: Standard Test Method for Determining the Total Concentration of Certain Elements in Toys

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 8124-5 testing. ISO 8124-5 specifies methods for sampling and breaking up toy materials and toy parts prior to analysis of the total concentration of the elements antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium.

Digestion methods of the above-mentioned elements are indicated for the following types of toy materials:

  • Paints, varnishes, varnishes, printing inks, polymers and similar coatings;
  • Polymeric and similar materials, whether or not textile-reinforced, including laminates, but excluding other textile materials;
  • Paper and cardboard;
  • Natural or synthetic textiles;
  • Metallic materials, whether or not coated;
  • Other materials, whether or not multicolored (for example, wood, fibreboard, fiberboard, bone and leather);
  • Materials intended to leave marks (eg graphite materials in pencils and liquid ink in pencils);
  • Bendable modeling materials, including modeling clays and gels;
  • Paints to be used as toys, including solid or liquid finger paints, lacquers, varnishes and the like;
  • Packaging materials that form part of the toy or are of intended play value.

The prepared test portion is digested in highly acidic conditions at high temperature using a hot plate digestion, a hot block digestion technique, or a microwave digestion system. Hot acid digestion destroys the matrix of material, allowing the relevant elements to dissolve and quantify with a suitable analytical instrument.

Only recognized analytical grade or equivalent reagents should be used. The concentration of the analyte or admixture in the reagents and water should be negligible compared to the lowest concentration to be determined.
