This standard practice defines standard atmospheres for the normal preconditioning, conditioning and testing of paper and paper products, paperboard, chipboard and containers made from them.
It also specifies procedures for processing these materials so that they can reach equilibrium with the atmosphere concerned. This standard practice can also be applied to standard pulp test hand papers. This standard practice does not include special conditioning and testing atmospheres, such as atmospheres that attempt to simulate tropical or arctic environments.
It is important to know the general limits of temperatures and the limits to which the temperature must be kept. Reaching the required relative humidity and temperature is not easy. For this reason, special attention is paid to the design, evaluation and maintenance of the standard room.
The TAPPI T 402 test standard does not include special conditioning and test atmospheres. Examples include those trying to simulate tropical or arctic environments.
For many papers and boards, roughly the same preconditioning moisture content as obtained by the procedure can be achieved. This is done using a sealed cabinet to achieve relative humidity.
Both temperature and relative humidity have serious effects on the physical properties of paper and board. An example of these effects includes changes in temperature. This is as effective as a 2% relative humidity (RH) change. For synthetic fibers and plastic laminates, the temperature effect may be greater than the relative humidity effect.
