TAPPI T460 Standard Test for Air Resistance (Gurley Method) of Paper

This method is used to measure approximately 6,45 cm square air resistance. The recommended range of the liquid column device is 100 to 5 seconds per 1800 mL cylinder displacement. For more impermeable papers, the time requirements become so extreme that other techniques are preferred.

This method measures the volume of air passing through the test specimen, with possible air leakage across the surface; therefore not suitable for paper or cardboard that cannot be clamped securely to prevent significant surface or edge leakage.

For a similar method of measuring air resistance that tests paper at higher pressure (approximately 3 kPa) and has higher resolution for measuring smaller volumes of air, refer to TAPPI T 536.
