This section 1217 establishes a consumer product safety standard for toddler mattresses manufactured or imported on or after October 20, 2011.
The plinth/stand must not support the crib mattress (i.e. the crib mattress falls off the stand and touches the floor, or the plinth/stand collapses when the crib mattress is not locked onto the plinth/stand). The lock/latch will engage automatically (without any other force or influence) under the weight of the crib mattress in all lateral positions.
The sleeping surface of the crib mattress should be at an angle of at least 20° from the horizontal when the crib is in the unlocked position. The cradle will provide visual indicators of an incorrect latch/lock. At a minimum, an indicator should be visible to a person standing near the two longest edges of the product.
Place the crib mattress on the base/stand in the intended use direction, without inserting any latches or locking mechanisms between the base/stand and the crib mattress. Do not disengage the latch/latch if the bed automatically engages the base/stand. If the bassinet can rest on the plinth/stand in one or more of the lateral unlocked positions in the intended use direction, it should be considered in the lateral position that is most likely to meet the requirements.
If the plinth/stand supports the bassinet in any unlocked position, place the inclinometer on the mattress support, approximately at the center of the mattress support. Care should be taken to avoid seams, snaps or other items that could affect the measurement reading.
