16 CFR 1615 Test for Flammability of Children's Pajamas

Flammability standards for children's pajamas have been enacted to reduce the unreasonable risk of burn injuries and death from fire associated with children's pajamas. Most burns occur not when children are asleep, but when they are awake, unsupervised, and wearing pajamas. The primary hazard is the ignition of the pajamas by contact with hot surfaces or small open sources of ignition, such as stove elements, matches and lighters.

The standards require that children's pajamas and fabric for such pajamas stop burning when the source of flame is removed.

This test guide is not a complete mandatory standard, but a tool that can be used in conjunction with the requirements set out in the Standards. The testing guide is provided for guidance only and is not intended to fully cover testing procedures and is not intended to replace or replace any part of the Standards. In the event of any inconsistency between this guideline and the Standards, the Standards will supersede this test guide.
