AATCC 61 Standard Test Method for Color Fastness to Washing

These accelerated washing tests are to evaluate the color fastness to washing of textiles that are expected to withstand frequent washing.

Fabric discoloration and surface changes from the detergent solution and abrasive action of five typical hand or home washes with or without chlorine are roughly approximated in a 45-minute test.

However, the dyeing effect produced by five typical hand or home washes cannot always be predicted by the 45-minute test. Dyeing is a function of the ratio of colored fabrics to undyed fabrics, the fiber content of fabrics in the wash load, and other end-use conditions that are not always predictable.

When this test method was originally developed, the various options of this method were for evaluating color change and staining on an accelerated basis with five household or commercial laundry washes.

Over the years, commercial laundry procedures have changed, and commercial cleaning today includes many different types of operations depending on the type of product being cleaned that cannot be repeated with a single accelerated laboratory procedure. In 2005, all references to commercial laundering were removed as it is not known whether these procedures accurately replicated the typical commercial laundering processes in use today.
