Typical products covered by the ANSI/BIFMA X5.9 standard include: bookcases, cabinets, wall-mounted cabinets, freestanding pedestals, and mobile pedestals. The test types defined within the scope of this standard are: static load loading, dynamic loading and endurance test.
Tables and desk products are tested according to ANSI/BIFMA X5.5 standard, panel systems are tested according to ANSI/BIFMA X5.6 standard. Seating products are tested according to the ANSI/BIFMA X5.1 standard or ANSI/BIFMA X5.4 standard depending on the features they offer.
To comply with this standard, not all storage units in the product line need to be tested, only worst-case scenarios need to be considered. Product offers are examined in advanced laboratories and which products need to be tested are determined. In this case, if the product was tested before 2004, a test-by-test comparison is made between the new and previous version of the standard to provide a better understanding of the effects of the new standard version.
Briefly, the ANSI/BIFMA X5.9 standard includes test methods and acceptance levels to help ensure acceptable safety and performance, regardless of construction materials, manufacturing processes, mechanical designs or aesthetic designs. These tests are not intended to evaluate a product in use.
Test methods were developed for an estimated product life of ten years based on single-shift use. Product life is affected by product use, maintenance, environment and other factors. Compliance of a product with this standard does not always guarantee a ten-year product life. The products can perform for more than a decade with proper and dedicated use. Acceptance levels here are based on BIFMA's actual field and testing experiences.
