DIN 12641-1 Intermodal Loading Units and Commercial Vehicles - Awnings - Part 1: Minimum Requirements

This standard specifies the minimum requirements for the strength and fastening of tarpaulins used in barter bodies and commercial vehicles for road and road/rail combined (intermodal transport) traffic.

In order to fulfill the customs legislation, the distance between the rings (horizontally and vertically) shall not be more than 200 mm, excluding the area around the struts. In the area of ​​the uprights, the distance may increase, but should not exceed 300 mm. Both vertical and horizontal loops should always be arranged flush. Zigzag attachments (strap buckles) will not be accepted.

The tarpaulin will be fixed with a suitable rope between the replaceable body brackets and the rings of the tarpaulin. Additional anchors of the awning (eg: tensioning triangles) apply.

The following ropes are allowed:

• hemp or sisal ropes with a diameter of not less than 8 mm, which must be covered with an additional transparent plastic sheath;
• Steel wire ropes with a diameter of not less than 3 mm.

Additional clear plastic sheathed steel wire ropes may be used. For other application cases, attachments must be made to meet application-specific requirements.

Vertically split awnings can only be used if the connection is suitable for regulation. Openings are only permitted if the connection meets the application-specific requirements of the mode of transport and the operationally necessary sealing against external influences is provided.
