DIN EN 53381-1 Testing Plastics - Determination of Thermostability of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) - Dehydrochlorination Methods

The tests specified in this standard may also be applied to other substances or their mixtures with polymers, provided that they decompose under the influence of heat with the elimination of hydrogen halides.

The thermal stability of PVC in the sense of this standard is when an irreversible chemical change occurs under the influence of heat.

The evaluation criteria for thermal stability are:

• The stability time tst and if it can be determined;
• Induction time.

The stability time tst is the time during which a certain amount of hydrogen chloride in the carrier gas environment leaves the sample under the conditions specified in this standard due to the effect of heat on the sample.
