This part of EN 1012 includes machines that include compressor units under the general term:

  • Compressor;
  • A propulsion system including the prime mover;
  • Any component or device necessary for operation is provided.

The requirements of this European Standard do not take into account the interaction between the compressor/compressor unit and other operations carried out in the field.

Performance levels or safety integrity levels are an important aspect of compressor design and should be determined by the manufacturer and user based on a risk assessment. This European standard does not cover the safety aspects of road transport for trailers, which are dealt with by EC legislation.

If common requirements for functional safety are to be applied to all process compressors, the diversity in the applications of process compressors can result in significantly different levels of residual risk. Therefore, in addition to the requirements of this standard, it may be necessary to apply risk assessment for safety-related control systems in certain applications to determine performance levels or safety integrity levels for relevant aspects of functional safety.

It was considered a practical move to separate the requirements for process gas compressors from those for air, nitrogen and other inert gases so that the requirements for one type of compressor could be changed without affecting the entire standard.
