This European standard specifies four methods for conditioning test specimens prepared for testing the weathering resistance of cladding materials and cladding systems for exterior masonry and concrete.
The specified conditioning methods allow for a wide range of weather conditions so that only in exceptional cases deviated conditioning methods are required. For example, the method to be used should be agreed upon between the parties concerned, unless otherwise specified in the standards defining certain test methods.
Depending on the location, surface slope and direction, building materials are exposed to UV radiation of different succession, duration and intensity, as well as temperature and humidity changes. Because of the diversity of these effects and their combinations, it makes sense to test the weather resistance of exterior wall and concrete coatings to verify that they meet certain requirements. The methods specified in this European standard are suitable for conditioning prior to further testing and evaluation of coatings' weather resistance.
This method allows conclusions regarding the behavior of wet surfaces at temperatures below 0 °C when ice crystals form in water-filled cavities. It is particularly important for porous materials and materials with high water absorption, applied to surfaces that are predominantly exposed to severe water stresses. Examples are horizontal surfaces, pedestals and curbs that are constantly exposed to splashing water.
