The European standard “EN 12521:2023 Furniture - Safety, stability and durability - Requirements for household tables” describes the minimum requirements for the safety, stability and durability of all types of household tables intended for use by adults, including those containing glass in their structure.
Additionally, additional test methods are included in the standard annexes. Appendix A (normative) contains test methods for finger pinching. Appendix B (informative) contains a tabletop bias test. Annex C (informative) contains a justification.
Office desks, office desks, desks for outdoor use, desks for educational institutions or outdoor desks covered by other European standards are excluded from the scope of this standard. Additionally, this standard does not apply to coffee tables.
Other than stability tests, this standard does not provide for evaluation of the suitability of any storage features in home desks.
The EN 12521 standard does not cover electrical safety requirements and requirements for resistance to aging and deterioration.
The latest update of this standard contains significant changes. For example,
In fact, the EN 12521 standard has replaced the standard “BSI-BS 4875-5 Robustness and sustainability of furniture - Part 5: Requirements for the sustainability, durability and durability of tables and carts for domestic use”.
This new standard specifies minimum requirements for the safety, strength and durability of all types of household tables for adult use, including those made of glass. This standard includes safety requirements, general requirements for workmanship, and requirements for cutting and pinch points.
Stability, strength and durability tests in the new standard classify desks according to two conditions:
The new standard defines two types of standard tables for stability testing under vertical load: tables with a height of 950 mm or less and tables with a height of more than 950 mm. It also includes the stability of tables with extension elements.
A tabletop deflection test is recommended if the deflection of the main surface of the table measured in the vertical static load test exceeds 1/250 of the span for wood-based panels, 1/150 of the span for wood products, or 1/100 of the span for other materials.
Meanwhile, the EN 12521 standard complies with the “EN 1730 Furniture - Tables - Test methods for determining strength and durability” standard.
In short, this European standard specifies the conditions for the safety, strength and durability of all types of household tables, including those containing glass in their structure. Any desk intended for use in the home environment or as an office desk is evaluated according to this standard.
