The particle size distribution of particulate materials will be determined by sieving; this applies to dispersions measured using sieves with a nominal aperture size of 0,025 mm and above.

The laser diffraction method described is applicable to aerosols or emulsions as well as powders suspended in a liquid or gaseous liquid. Measurable particle sizes are between 0,5 µm and an upper limit that can vary up to 3600 µm depending on the optical configuration of the laser equipment used. The principle of the method and guidance on measurement are given in ISO 13320-1.

This method is applicable to the determination of water-soluble material content in powdered activated carbon and granular activated carbon. A powdered activated carbon sample is extracted with hot water. The extract is evaporated to dryness and weighed.

Use the non-specific absorbance correction device. Adjust the absorbance zero of the apparatus using water as a reference. Flash each of the calibration solutions three times and record the steady reading by flushing the apparatus with water after each insertion. Prepare a calibration curve by plotting the mean of each group of three readings versus concentration. Flame the test solution, record the reading, and flush the apparatus with water. Repeat this procedure twice and determine the zinc concentration from the calibration curve using the average of the three readings. Analyze the blank solution in the same way.
