Other requirements not specified in this standard may apply, for example, to thermally toughened borosilicate safety glass incorporated into assemblies such as laminated glass or insulating units or subjected to additional treatment, such as coating. Additional requirements are specified in the appropriate product standard. Thermally toughened borosilicate safety glass does not lose its mechanical or thermal properties in this case.
Thermally toughened borosilicate safety glass has higher thermal shock resistance and safer fracture behavior compared to annealed glass. Thermally toughened borosilicate safety glass should also be classified according to EN 12600 when it must be used to provide protection under accidental human influence.
The refractive properties of thermally toughened borosilicate safety glass are directly related to the amount of surface compaction; these features are not size dependent. When thermally toughened borosilicate safety glass is produced with the right degree of surface compression, in the event of breakage, thermally toughened borosilicate safety glass breaks into multiple small pieces whose edges are often blunt.
