This part of EN 1366 specifies a test method for determining the fire resistance of smoke extraction ducts used in single chamber applications only. In such applications, the smoke extraction system is intended to operate only up to flammability (typically 600°C).
This test method is only suitable for ducts made of non-combustible materials. It can only be applied to four-sided and circular ducts. One-, two-, and three-sided ducts are not covered.
This test is designed to cover horizontal fume extraction ducts for single chamber applications only. This test method in Chapter 9 is only applicable to smoke evacuation ducts that do not pass into other fire compartments. Represents a developing fire (pre-flashover) exposure to fire. The test method described in EN 1366-8 should be used for smoke evacuation ducts that pass into other compartments.
The smoke extraction duct is part of the smoke extraction system, which also includes smoke control dampers and smoke extraction fans. The method described in this test standard is complex and requires advanced instrumentation. Therefore, attempting to test more than one assembly in this test is not recommended.
Leakage is measured both at ambient temperature and when exposed to 600°C. During the tests, air/gases are drawn through the duct at the differential pressure between the inside and outside of the duct. Leakage is determined by sealing the openings in the duct in the furnace at ambient temperature and taking flow measurements by means of a flow meter placed just in front of the exhaust fan. For leak detection at 600°C, oxygen measurement techniques are used.
