This European standard specifies a reference method for determining the release of lead and cadmium from ceramic articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs.
The problem of lead and cadmium release from ceramic ware requires effective control tools to ensure population protection against potential hazards arising from the use of incorrectly formulated, applied and baked glazes and decorations on food contact surfaces of ceramic ware.
This part of the European Standard specifies the test method for the determination of lead and cadmium released from ceramic surfaces. At the time of the development of Directive 84/500/EEC, flame atomic absorption spectroscopy (FAAS) was the usual method and is now used, although other analytical methods are available.
Ceramic products are contacted with 22 ml/l acetic acid solution for 24 hours at 40°C to remove lead or cadmium, if any, from the surfaces of the objects. Extracted lead and cadmium ratios are determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry.
Lead or cadmium release is calculated separately from both the container and the total inner surface of the lid, in milligrams per container and lid, respectively. Both values should be added and the total should be related to the surface area expressed in milligrams/square decimeters or the volume of the individual container expressed in milligrams per liter, depending on the case.
