This standard specifies a test method for screening the resistance of polymeric geosynthetic barriers to stress cracking. The test can be applied to polypropylene and polyethylene-based products and to all other polymeric geosynthetic barriers with a partially crystalline structure.
The described method is suitable for suitability testing of smooth surface (non-textured) geosynthetic barriers. However, the resistance to stress cracking of the resin used in the manufacture of structured surface materials can be evaluated by testing on a plate formed from the respective resin or where configuration is performed as a separate process step.
Testing can be performed on intermediate flat material on a preformed flat surface geosynthetic barrier. The data are suitable for screening and determining fitness, but not for deriving performance data such as lifetime unless supported by more evidence.
Stress cracking is a phenomenon observed in most thermoplastic materials. It is defined as internal or external cracking of the material caused by tensile stresses less than the short-term mechanical strength of the material.
