EN 14766 Mountain Bikes - Safety Requirements and Test Methods

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of EN 14766 testing. This European Standard specifies the safety and performance requirements for the design, assembly and testing of bicycles and subassemblies for off-road, rough terrain use and lays down guidelines for instructions for the use and maintenance of such bicycles. Applies to bicycles where the seat can be adjusted to provide a maximum seat height of 635 mm or more.

EN 14766 Mountain Bikes - Safety Requirements and Test Methods

It does not apply to specific types of bikes such as racing bikes and tandems or bikes designed and equipped for use in demanding applications such as approved competition events, aerobatics or aerobatic maneuvers. Due to the existence of several different national regulations applicable in European Countries, no requirements regarding lighting equipment, reflectors and warning devices are specified in this European Standard.

This European Standard has been developed in response to European-wide demand and the aim is to ensure that bicycles manufactured in accordance with it are as safe as possible in practice. The tests are designed to ensure the strength and durability of the individual parts and the bike as a whole, demanding that high quality and safety considerations be taken into account throughout from the design stage.

In general, for static, impact, and fatigue tests, each test should be performed on a new test specimen, but if only one specimen is available, it is permissible to perform all of these tests on the same specimen, in the fatigue test sequence.

Folding bikes must meet all test requirements. The folding mechanisms should be designed in such a way that the bike can be locked for simple, solid, safe use and that no cables are damaged when folded. No locking mechanisms should come into contact with the wheels or tires while driving, and it should not be possible to unintentionally loosen or unlock the folding mechanisms while driving.
