This European standard covers test methods for determining the properties of composites made of cellulose-based materials and thermoplastics, often called wood-polymer composites (WPC) or natural fiber composites (NFC).
This part of EN 15534 applies to cellular or non-cellular compounds and products made from cellulose-based materials and thermoplastics intended to be processed by plastics processing techniques, without thresholds for cellulose-based material content.
Not all features listed in this part of EN 15534 must necessarily be considered for a particular application. The requirements for test parameters and test methods for a particular application are specified in the relevant section of EN 15534.
WPC materials can be processed by different techniques such as extrusion for profiles, calendering for films and sheets, injection molding or compression molding. The content of natural fibers and polymers depends on the application and processing techniques. WPC materials can neither be considered filled plastic nor a special type of wood. They should be considered as different materials with their own properties.
Different approaches to conditioning are defined depending on the potential application of WPC products or the requirements for product testing.
Conditioning for testing purposes under factory production control and other conditions shall be carried out in accordance with specifications defined by the manufacturer. Conditioning parameters and tolerances will be documented.
