The need for limits and fits for machined workpieces was mainly due to the inherent inaccuracy of manufacturing methods and the fact that "precision" of size was found unnecessary for most workpieces. To fulfill this function, it was found to be sufficient to produce a given workpiece in such a way that its size remains within two permissible limits, that is, a tolerance; This is the size variation that is acceptable in manufacturing.
Similarly, where a certain condition of fit is required between mating workpieces, it is necessary to attribute a positive or negative margin to the basic dimension, i.e. a "deviation", to achieve the required clearance or interference.
With developments in industry and international trade, it became necessary to develop formal systems of limitation and compliance, first at the industrial level, then at the national level, and then at the international level.
For the sake of simplicity and also due to the importance of cylindrical workpieces with circular cross-section, only these are explicitly mentioned. However, it should be clearly understood that the tolerances and deviations given in this International Standard apply equally to workpieces that are not of circular cross-section.
