EN 61034-2 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Smoke Density of Cables Burning Under Defined Conditions

It describes the means of preparing and installing the cables for testing, the method of burning the cables, and gives the recommended requirements for the evaluation of test results.

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

• inclusion of cables with a diameter of up to 1 mm;
• Inclusion of non-circular cables;
• Adding guidance on testing cables over 80mm diameter;
• Identification of the elements of the test report;
• Adding guidance on calculating other parameters for fire safety engineering purposes.

To prevent movement during testing, test pieces or bundles should be connected with two turns of approximately 100 mm diameter wire at the center and every 0,5 mm from the centre. In addition, test pieces or bundles may be stretched at one or both ends by means of a suitable device, such as a spring or a weight.

Wires burn under certain conditions, for example, several wires burn horizontally. The light transmittance ( lt ) under flaming and smoldering conditions can be used as a means of comparing different cables or meeting specific requirements.

For the purposes of this standard, the term "electrical cable" includes all insulated metallic conductor cables used for the transmission of energy or signals.
