EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN 846-5 standard. This European standard specifies the coupler method for determining the tensile and compressive load capacity and load displacement characteristics of masonry ties embedded in mortar joints.
The test is designed for ties used to bind two wall sheets together and for mortar bed ties to connect wall sheets to other structures.
The bond is embedded in a typical mortar of the type where bond is specified between a pair (five) wall units. The ligament is then subjected to tension or compression until rupture occurs.
Ten couplet samples for each compression and tensile test shall be prepared with their ties embedded in the declared minimum embedment length. Where both ends of asymmetrical ties are tested separately, the number of samples for each should be doubled.
When testing in tension, the clamp may be applied to the tie at a distance equal to the gap width the tie is intended to use. When performing the compression test, the clamp should be applied from the coupler at a distance equal to the gap width for which the tie is intended to be used plus 15 mm.
Alternatively, if the resistance of the anchor is to be determined separately from the part bridging the gap, the clamp should be placed close to the face of the couplet. In the case of a compression test, a gap of about 5 mm is required. The distance from the clamp to the face of the couplet should be measured and recorded.
