Bulk density is defined as the mass of a refractory product per unit volume, including both solid and porous components. The standard provides two methods for measuring bulk density: the water immersion method and the wax immersion method. Both methods involve determining the weight of the refractory product before and after immersion in a liquid and calculating the volume using the liquid displacement method.
Apparent porosity is the ratio of the volume of pores or voids in a refractory product to its total volume, expressed as a percentage. The standard specifies two methods for measuring apparent porosity: the water absorption method and the wax impregnation method. The water absorption method involves determining the weight of the refractory product before and after immersion in water, while the wax impregnation method involves immersing the refractory product in molten wax and calculating the volume of the pores based on the weight increase.
Actual porosity is the ratio of the volume of open pores in a refractory product to its total volume and is expressed as a percentage. The standard provides a mercury input porosimetry method to measure true porosity. This method involves injecting mercury into the pores of the refractory product and measuring the pressure required to fill the pores.
