EN 993-11 Dense Shaped Refractory Products - Test for Determination of Resistance to Thermal Shock

In Method A, the test piece is heated homogeneously to 950°C in an electric oven, then removed, placed on a steel plate and exposed to blast air. After quenching, the test piece is subjected to a tension of 0,3 MPa in a bending machine. This cycle is repeated until failure of the test piece occurs. Resistance to thermal shock is defined by the number of cycles the test piece endured before breaking.

In Method B, the test piece is heated homogeneously to 950°C in an electric oven, then removed, placed on a steel plate and exposed to blast air. After extinguishing this is repeated 4 times. After cooling, the residual cold MOR and residual sonic velocity are determined.

Thermal shock tests are generally geared towards testing material properties. This is done by standardizing brick sizes and heating conditions, so that relative quality rankings of different brick types can be established. However, in the case of thermal shock, this can lead to complications in the field of engineering.

The biggest challenge is that there are various material properties depending on the type of heating conditions. This is best illustrated on the basis of thermal stress parameters, which are a measure for critical crack initiation.
