EN ISO 10195 Standard Test for Leather, Chemical Determination of Chromium(VI) Content in Leather, Thermal Pre-Aging of Leather and Determination of Hexavalent Chromium

This standard specifies a thermal pre-aging procedure for leather to obtain indicators on the tendency to form hexavalent chromium under certain conditions and the determination of hexavalent chromium according to ISO 17075‑1 or ISO 17075‑2.

This thermal pre-aging procedure does not simulate any real situation in leather production or use. It can be applied to all kinds of chrome tanned leather.

More than 80% of the leather is tanned using chromium(III) salts. Industry recommends manufacturing procedures to avoid oxidative conditions that could allow the formation of traces of hexavalent chromium [chromium(VI)] in leather.

Recreating the natural aging process is difficult. Therefore, a series of pre-aging tests, some of which are used in commercial leather specifications, have been proposed to predict the tendency to develop traces of hexavalent chromium in chromium(III) tanned leather.
