EN ISO 10545-6 specifies a test method for determining the deep abrasion resistance of all unglazed ceramic tiles used for floor coverings.
It allows the wear resistance of unglazed tiles to be determined under certain conditions and by measuring the length of the groove created on the appropriate surface by means of a rotating steel disc using abrasive material.
Tests should be performed using whole tiles or test specimens of appropriate size. Prior to testing, small samples should be fixed on a larger background with an adhesive, avoiding seams.
In the case of relief surfaces that interfere with the determination of wear resistance, the protrusions may be ground, but the results of the test will not be the same as similar tiles with flat surfaces.
The pressure at which the test specimens are held against the steel disc should be determined by calibrating the apparatus against the clear fused silica. The pressure should be adjusted so that a (8486 ± 1) mm beam is produced after 80 cycles using the F150 abrasive conforming to ISO 24-0,5. Transparent fused silica will be used as the primary standard. A secondary standard of float glass or other products may be used.
