EN ISO 12402-1 specifies the safety requirements for life jackets intended for use on offshore vessels, with regard to the technical provisions of the International Convention for the safety of life at sea.
EN ISO 12402 is intended to provide guidance on the design and application of personal flotation devices (hereinafter PFDs) for persons engaged in work or leisure activities in or near water.
PFDs manufactured, selected and maintained to this standard must provide a reasonable assurance of safety against the danger of drowning to a submerged person.
PFDs provide varying degrees of buoyancy in garments that are lightweight and only as bulky and restrictive as needed for their intended use. They will need to be secure when fitted to provide positive support in the water and allow the wearer to swim or actively assist themselves or others. The selected PFD should ensure that the user's mouth and nose are clear of water, under the expected conditions of use and the user's ability to assist.
It is essential that owners, users and employers select PFDs that meet the right standards for the conditions in which they will be used. Manufacturers and sellers of PFDs should clearly communicate product features, alternative options, and limitations to normal use to prospective buyers prior to purchase.
Similarly, framework regulations for the use of these garments should carefully consider what grades and performance levels are most appropriate for the foreseeable conditions of use, allowing for higher risk conditions. These higher risk conditions should take into account the highest probability of accidental immersion and the expected consequences in such emergencies.
