EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of EN ISO 12402-5 standard. This standard specifies safety requirements for buoyancy aids with performance level 50. Applies only to buoyancy aids for adults and children with a body weight of more than 25 kg, used in sheltered waters.
Buoyancy aids require the active participation of the user in situations where help and rescue are imminent. Due to their one-piece and two-piece nature, buoyancy suit PFDs are considered to qualify as special application devices according to EN ISO 12402-6.
EN ISO 12402 is intended to serve as a guide to manufacturers, purchasers and users of such safety equipment in ensuring that the equipment provides an effective standard of performance in use. It is equally important that the designer encourages the wearing of equipment by making it comfortable and attractive for continued use on or near water rather than being stored in a closet for emergency use.
Launchable devices and buoyancy pads are not covered by this part of EN ISO 12402. The primary function of a PFD is to support the user in reasonable safety in the water.
PFDs provide varying degrees of buoyancy in garments that are lightweight and only bulky and restrictive as needed for their intended use. They will need to be secure when fitted to provide positive support in the water and allow the wearer to swim or actively assist themselves or others. The selected PFD should ensure that the user's mouth and nose are clear of water, under expected conditions of use and the user's ability to assist.
