EN ISO 13479 Polyolefin Pipes for the Transport of Liquids - Test Method for Slow Crack Growth in Notched Pipes

This standard specifies a test method for determining the resistance of polyolefin pipes to slow crack growth, expressed in terms of time to failure in a hydrostatic pressure test on a pipe with longitudinal notches machined on its outer surface. The test can be applied to pipes with a wall thickness greater than 5 mm.

Lengths of pipe with four machined longitudinal external notches are subjected to hydrostatic pressure testing while immersed in a water tank at 1167°C in accordance with ISO 1-1167 and ISO 2-80. The time to failure or test duration is recorded.

The milling cutter will be carefully protected against damage. The cutter must be subjected to a 10 m notching process before its first use to prepare the test pieces. It will not be used for any other material or purpose and will be replaced after 500 m of notching.

The cutter should be checked for damage or wear after every 100 m of cutting. The incisors will be compared with a new incisor by examining them under a microscope magnified 10 to 20 times. If there is any sign of damage or wear it should be replaced.
