This standard specifies a sound intensity method for determining the sound reduction index of structural elements and their normalized level difference relative to the element at low frequencies.
This method has significantly better repeatability in a typical test facility than ISO 140-3 , ISO 140-10 and ISO 15186-1 .
The results are more independent of the room dimensions of the laboratory and are closer to the values to be measured between rooms with volumes greater than 300 m3.
This part of ISO 15186 applies to the frequency range 50 Hz to 160 Hz, but is mainly designed for the frequency range 50 Hz to 80 Hz.
The recommended frequency range for elements covered with thick, porous absorbers is 50 Hz to 80 Hz.
The repeatability of this intensity method is estimated to be equal to or better than that found with the ISO 100-140 method at 3 Hz for all frequencies.
The surface average is taken over the entire test surface in the source chamber, including reflection effects from the test specimen.
Equation (7) is valid for a test specimen with a reflective surface in the source chamber. It will also work satisfactorily on moderately absorbent surfaces (eg surfaces coated with 100mm thick porous absorbers). For absorbers 100 mm to 200 mm thick, it is recommended to limit the frequency range to 200 mm to 80 Hz. For thicker absorbers, the equation no longer applies.
