EN ISO 4484-1 Microplastics from Textile Sources - Determination of Material Loss from Fabrics During Washing

There is significant evidence that items can be released during washing of textiles. The purpose of this document is to provide a method for evaluating the degree to which different fabrics shed fibers and fiber fragments of all types, for use in laboratories.

The results obtained using this standard should allow manufacturers of textile products to make an informed choice about the type of fabric to be used to reduce/minimize shedding, as well as to test different production methods that minimize material loss during washing.

The test sample is subjected to an accelerated washing process under appropriate conditions of temperature, time and mechanical influence. The resulting washing liquid is vacuum filtered. The material loss is evaluated gravimetrically as the approximate material loss during domestic laundering, but the direct correlation has not yet been determined.
