This standard specifies an identification system that includes mandatory markings for visual interpretation and optional features for automatic identification and electronic data exchange, and a coding system for data on container size and type. It replaces the technically revised second edition.
The terms "mandatory" and "optional" in this standard are used to distinguish ISO marking requirements that must be mandatory for all containers from those that are not mandatory for all containers. Optional markings are included to promote better understanding and uniform application of optional marking.
If a preference has been made for the display of an optional trademark, the provisions regarding the trademark in this standard will be applied. The terms "mandatory" and "optional" do not refer to the requirements of any regulatory agency.
This standard includes any temporary business marks, permanent marks, data plates, etc., which may be required by intergovernmental agreements, national legislation or non-governmental organizations. not covered.
This standard does not cover the display of technical data on tank containers and in no way contains identification marks or safety markings for cargo items that may be carried in freight containers. The container owner code will consist of three capital letters, be unique and be registered with the Registrar.
