This standard specifies two methods (A and B) for determining the linear dynamic mechanical properties of plastics, namely the storage and loss components of the torsional modulus as a function of temperature for small deformations in the frequency range from 0,1 Hz to frequency.

The temperature dependence of these properties, measured over a sufficiently wide temperature range (eg -50°C to +150°C for most commercially available plastics), provides information on the transition zones (eg glass transition and glass transition). It also provides information about the onset of plastic flow.

The two methods described cannot be applied to non-symmetrical laminates. The methods are not suitable for testing rubbers to which the user refers to ISO 4664-2.

A test specimen of uniform cross-section is gripped by two clamps, one fixed and the other attached to a disk that acts as an inertial element with a rod. The tip of the specimen attached to the disc is excited with the disc to produce freely decreasing torsional oscillations.

Clamp the test sample between the upper and lower clamps. The longitudinal axis of the test specimen must coincide with the axis of rotation of the oscillating system. Any misalignment of the sample will cause lateral oscillations that will interfere with the normal oscillating process.
