EN ISO 6941 specifies a method for measuring flame propagation times when exposed to a certain temperature of vertically oriented textile fabrics and industrial products in the form of single or multi-component fabrics (coated, quilted, multi-layered, sandwich combinations and similar combinations).
This method evaluates the properties of textile fabrics in response to flame contact under controlled conditions. Results may not apply to situations with restricted air supply or exposure to large sources of intense heat.
The effect of stitches on the behavior of fabrics can be determined by this method, where the stitch is positioned within the test sample to be exposed to the test flame. Where applicable, trims should be tested as part of the fabric assembly in which they are or will be used.
A defined flame from a specific burner is applied to the surface or bottom edge of vertically oriented textile samples for 10 s. Flame propagation times in seconds are recorded for the flame front to move between the marker threads adjacent to the surface of the test sample and three distances from the ignited flame.
The volume of air surrounding the test site should be such that the test is not affected by any reduction in oxygen concentration. Where an open-fronted cabinet is used for testing, preparation should be made to allow the specimen to be mounted at least 300 mm from any wall.
Combustion of materials can produce smoke and toxic gases that can affect the health of operators. Between tests, the atmosphere of the test site, which must be of a size that will not endanger the health of the operators, should be purged of fumes and fumes with an extractor fan or other means of ventilation.
