This part of EN ISO 7619 covers a method for determining the notch hardness of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber by means of a pocket hardness meter calibrated in IRHD. The use of such measuring devices is primarily for control purposes, not for specification purposes. It is possible to increase the accuracy by fixing the pocket hardness tester on a support.
Place the test piece on a flat, hard, hard surface. Hold the hardness tester in position so that the center of the recess is at least 12 mm from the edges of the test piece. Keeping the foot parallel to the surface of the test piece and making sure that the indentation is perpendicular to the rubber surface, apply the presser foot to the test piece as quickly and without shock as possible.
Where applicable, test pieces should be conditioned for a period of at least 23529 hour at one of the standard laboratory temperatures specified in ISO 1 immediately prior to testing. The same temperature should be used throughout any single test or series of tests intended to be comparable.
Apply sufficient force only to ensure firm contact between the presser foot and the test piece, and take the reading at the specified time after the presser foot has firmly contacted the test piece. The standard test time will be 3 sec for vulcanized rubber and 15 sec for thermoplastic rubber. Other test times may be used, provided that it is specified in the test report. Rubbers of unknown types should be treated as if they had been cured.
