This standard specifies a method for the determination of carbon monoxide (CO) in the vapor phase of cigarette smoke. It replaces the first edition for which it created its technical revision.
The collection system must not interfere with the normal performance of the smoking machine and the consequent determination of total particulate matter and nicotine.
The impermeability of the gas collection device to a vapor phase must be checked with a vapor phase containing a volume fraction of CO. The CO concentration should be measured immediately after filling the previously evacuated gas collection device. After a not least time, the measured value of the CO concentration in the vapor phase in the device should not differ by more than a volume fraction from the value expected from the initial determination.
The compensation gas will be nitrogen, as other gases may alter the detected carbon monoxide response. The gases used must be of high purity (with a low carbon dioxide content) and used within the manufacturer's time limits.
The NDIR analyzer should be calibrated with at least three standard gas mixtures with accurately known concentrations within a relative error spanning the expected range, avoiding extrapolation of the calibration curve. Typically ca., and volume fractions of CO in nitrogen are suitable.
