EN ISO 9073-9 Textiles - Test Methods for Non-Woven Fabrics - Part 9: Test for Determination of the Coefficient of Drape

This part of EN ISO 9073 specifies a test method used to determine the drape coefficient of fabrics (non-woven, woven and knitted fabrics).

The circular sample of fabric being tested is held horizontally between smaller concentric discs and the outer ring of fabric is allowed to hang in folds around the lower support disc. Both of the following evaluation methods are available in this procedure and are listed as methods A and B.

For Method A, the shadow of the draped sample is cast from below onto a paper ring of known mass and the same size as the unsupported portion of the test sample. The outline of the shadow is traced on the paper ring and then the paper is cut along the shadow trace. The cover coefficient is the mass of that portion of the paper ring representing the shadow, expressed as a percentage of the mass of the entire paper ring.

For Method B, the shadow of the draped sample is cast from below onto a white layer covering the upper translucent cap and middle plates. Detailed quantitative information on the drape of the test sample is obtained from digital images taken with a commercial digital camera (or a scanner) after the paper is cut around the shadow contour. Captured images with initial gray levels are converted to monochrome images by noise filtering and thresholding.
