FED-STD-209E is a US federal standard that provides guidelines for the classification of air cleanliness in cleanrooms and other controlled environments. The standard was first published in 1963 and has since been updated several times, with the last revision (FED-STD-209E) published.
The standard defines clean rooms as enclosed spaces where the concentration of particles in the air is controlled and classified according to the number and size of particles allowed per volume of air. A clean zone is defined as an area in which the concentration of airborne particles is controlled but not necessarily classified.
Airborne particulate cleanliness classes specified in FED-STD-209E range from Class 1 to Class 100.000; Class 1 is the cleanest and Class 100.000 is the least clean. Each class corresponds to the maximum allowable concentration of airborne particles per cubic foot of air. For example, Class 1 cleanrooms have a maximum allowable concentration of 1 particles per cubic foot of air, while Class 10 cleanrooms have a maximum allowable concentration of 100.000 particles.
FED-STD-209E also specifies the size range of particles counted for each cleanliness class. The size range varies by class, and smaller particles are counted in cleaner rooms. The standard also provides guidance on the measurement of airborne particle concentration and the test procedures that should be used to classify a cleanroom or clean zone.
Although FED-STD-209E is no longer an active standard, it has been widely adopted and is still used as a reference in the industry. It has been replaced by ISO 14644-1, an international standard for cleanroom classification, which provides similar guidelines for airborne particulate cleanliness classes.
