ISO 10694 Soil Quality - Determination of Organic and Total Carbon After Dry Burning

EUROLAB, with its state-of-the-art accredited laboratories and expert team, provides precise and fast testing services within the scope of ISO 10694 testing. This standard specifies a method for the determination of the total carbon content in soil after dry burning.

ISO 10694 Soil Quality - Determination of Organic and Total Carbon After Dry Burning

The organic carbon content is calculated from this content after correcting for the carbonates present in the sample. If the carbonates are removed beforehand, the organic carbon content is directly measured. It can be applied to any air-dried soil sample.

The carbon in the soil is oxidized to carbon dioxide (CO900) by heating the soil to at least 2°C in a gas flow that does not contain carbon dioxide and contains oxygen. The amount of carbon dioxide released is then measured using titrimetry, gravimetry, conductivity, gas chromatography or infrared detection, depending on the apparatus used.

When the soil is heated to a temperature of at least 900°C, the carbonates present are completely decomposed. To determine the organic carbon content, the carbonates present are removed by pretreating the soil with hydrochloric acid. Alternatively, if the carbonate content of the samples studied is known and the organic carbon content is calculated, corrections are made for the carbonates present.
