ISO 12216 Small Boat - Windows - Portholes - Covers - Blind Lights and Doors - Strength and Waterproofing Requirements Test

This International standard specifies the technical requirements for windows, portholes, hatch covers, blind lights and doors on small boats up to 24 m hull length, taking into account the hull type, design category and location of the device.

The devices considered in this international standard are only those that are critical to the ship's watertightness, that is, which can cause flooding if the plate ruptures.

This International standard is intended to be used mainly for recreational boats, but may be used for small non-recreational boats up to a hull length of 24 m, with the exception of lifeboats. However, it does not apply to commercial or work boats used in heavy conditions.

Other International standards, eg. With regard to stability and buoyancy, there may be restrictions on the location of devices that fall outside the scope of this International standard and are therefore not covered here. However, the builder or user must ensure that the devices comply with other relevant International Standards.

The lower edge of any opening tool should be located at least 200 mm above the waterline when the boat is fully loaded, ready for use and upright. These opening means must in any case be placed in accordance with the relevant requirements of ISO 12217.
