This part of ISO 1268 covers a method for preparing plastic test plates reinforced by the filament winding process using textile glass rovings and thermosetting resins (excluding pre-impregnated fibres).
It covers the preparation of unidirectional reinforced sheets under optimum industrial conditions, from which test specimens can be cut for various static mechanical tests.
This part of ISO 1268 was created for glass-reinforced plastics made of polyester or epoxy resin, but can be expanded to include other types of resins and reinforcements.
A resin-impregnated wick (or a set of suppositories together) is wound onto a die in several successive layers. The required final thickness of the plates is achieved by strapping the outer mold parts onto the old. The polymerization can be carried out in a press with heated plates or in an oven.
This will consist of an old frame with flat floors on both sides, on which the roving is wound, and pieces of outer molding designed to be placed on both sides of the winding and pressed against the edges of the former, thus accurately defining the thickness. It is therefore recommended that the impregnation bath be double-walled that allows the circulation of a temperature-regulating liquid, and that the dimensions of the bath allow an impregnation length of at least 400 mm and provide a resin capacity of about 1 I.
