ISO 1268-8 specifies general principles and procedures for compression molding of test plates from two types of fiber-reinforced thermosetting molding compounds: plate molding compound (SMC) and cast molding compound (BMC).

The compression molding of SMC and BMC differs from that of all other compression moldable reinforced thermosetting materials. Due to the maturation process that typically takes place prior to molding and the compound's ability to flow during molding, special procedures are required to produce test plates from these compounds.
For engineers designing new molds, knowledge of anisotropy imparted to molding under defined molding conditions is essential. Therefore, test plates from which the test specimens are to be cut must be produced in comparable conditions.
This part of ISO 1268 is limited to explaining test plate preparation methods. The conditions in which the materials used are handled will comply with the national regulations in force in each country and personnel will be informed of the hazards involved and appropriate precautions will be taken.
A device or fixture should be used to hold the test plates as they cool. A non-metallic cooling rack with slots is recommended to keep the plates in a vertical position at least 20mm apart. The ends of the plates should preferably be protected from damage.
