A dry room evacuated by a vacuum pump is separated by a test sample from a wet room in which the relative humidity of a gas stream is controlled at a certain level. The water vapor delivered through the sample is collected in a sampling cycle for a specified period of time. The absolute mass of the collected water is measured using a gas chromatograph. The water vapor transmission rate is then calculated from the delivered water vapor mass, the time and the transmission area of ​​the sample.

Samples with thicknesses determined in accordance with ISO 4593 should be conditioned at the same temperature and humidity specified for testing for a period appropriate to the material being tested, unless otherwise agreed between the parties concerned.

The apparatus includes a two-chamber gas delivery cell, a sampling loop to trap the penetrating water vapor, switching valves, a gas chromatograph, a humidity controller (water chamber) and a vacuum pump.

Using a liquid syringe, inject a known volume of each solution into the gas chromatograph and record the chromatogram for each under the same conditions. Determine the peak area in the chromatogram corresponding to the injected water.
