ISO 15996 Gas Cylinders - Characteristics and Type Testing of Cylinder Valves with Residual Pressure Devices

This standard applies to the following types of RPV:

• Cylinder valves intended for installation on refillable portable gas cylinders;
• Master valves for bundles of cylinders (excluding ball valves);
• Cylinder valves or main valves with integrated pressure regulator (VIPR);
• Valves for pressure drums and cylinders.

ISO 15996 does not apply to RPVs for portable fire extinguishers, cryogenic equipment, low pressure refrigerants (cylinder test pressure less than 50 bar), dissolved gases or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

The purpose of ISO 15996 is to ensure the safe operation of cylinder valves with residual pressure devices designed to maintain minimum pressure in the cylinder to prevent the ingress of contaminants or substances that could compromise the quality or safety of the stored product.
