ISO 16000-33 Indoor Air - Test for Gas Chromatography Spectrometry

This standard specifies the sampling and analysis of phthalates in indoor air and defines the sampling and analysis of phthalates in house dust and solvent wiped surface samples by means of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Two alternative sampling and processing methods for indoor air have been identified that have proven comparability in a round robin test[4]. Sampling can then be performed using absorbent tubes with thermal desorption and GC-MS analysis. Alternatively, sampling can take other types of sorbent tubes which are then analyzed by solvent extraction by GC-MS.

Depending on the sampling method, dimethyl phthalate to diisodecylphthalate compounds can be analyzed in house dust as described in Annex C[8]. Inspection of house dust samples is only suitable as a screening method. This research results in indicative values ​​only and is not acceptable for the final assessment of a potential need for action.

Dimethyl phthalate to diisoundesylphthalate can be analyzed in solvent wipe samples as described in Appendix B. Solvent wipe samples are suitable for non-quantitative source identification.

In principle, the method is also suitable for the analysis of other phthalates, adipates and cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid esters, but this is justified in each case by determining the performance characteristics.
