ISO 16770 Plastics, Determination of Environmental Stress Cracking (ESC) of Polyethylene, Full Notch Creep Test

EUROLAB laboratory provides testing and compliance services within the scope of ISO 16770 standard. This standard specifies a method for determining the environmental stress cracking (ESC) resistance of polyethylene (PE) materials in a defined test environment.

ISO 16770 Plastics, Determination of Environmental Stress Cracking (ESC) of Polyethylene, Full Notch Creep Test

The test is performed on notched test specimens machined from molded sheets/samples or finished products. The test sample is subjected to a static tensile load when immersed in a medium such as a surfactant solution maintained at a certain temperature. The downtime is measured.

The method was developed specifically for polyethylene materials, but can be used to evaluate PE products such as pipes, fusion welds/fittings, and blow molded PE containers to study the impact of aggressive environments, i.e. dangerous goods and chemicals.

The method is suitable for use with test specimens machined from molded or compression molded sheets or injection molded specimens of selected sizes, or finished products such as molds and pipes.

When test specimens are machined from extruded or molded parts, the results can be affected not only by the properties of the material, but also by the stresses or orientation introduced during processing.
